NEW MYKKIIIII BLLLAAANNCCCCCO on Interview!

Monday, May 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM

“If you’ve been browsing the blogs as of late, chances are you’ve caught a glimpse of transgendered talent Mykki Blanco (also known as Michael David Quattlebaum Jr.). The rapper/singer/songwriter/poet/performance artist has been making a big splash thanks to her rapid rhymes and gender-bending style, and certainly sure to aid in her rise to prominence is the new Mitch Moore-directed clip for “Join My Militia (Nas Gave Me A Perm).” The video, which aligns perfectly with the slowed-up, gain-heavy banger produced by Arca, finds a makeup-smeared Blanco on a dark and desolate beach, with aggressively interchanging shots of the lyricist sauntering seductively and screaming her raps with an alluring swagger while a cigarette and a bottle of whiskey rest in her hand. Mykki knows how to captivate her audience, and “Militia” is proof if one needed any—not even her masked co-stars, dead fish hanging limply on trees behind her, or a slimy squid can distract you from Blanco’s sensational star power. After this clip gets around (and Blanco’s new EP Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels drops tomorrow), chances are the New York-based artist won’t have any problem finding new militia members.”

THE MYKKI BLANCO & THE MUTANT ANGELS EP, FEATURING THE TRACKS “AVENUE D” AND “HEAD IS A STONE,” IS OUT NOW ON 7″ VINYL VIA OHWOW. TO PURCHASE, CLICK HERE. THE EIGHT-SONG DIGITAL EP IS AVAILABLE VIA UNO NYC TOMORROW ON ITUNES AND AMAZON.

☜✿BEHIND THE SCENES : VICE ~ PRETTY KOOL-A✿☞

Friday, May 11, 2012 at 1:32 AM

My buddy Sandy Kim and I did a fashion feature together you can find in the new issue of Vice Magazine. It’s called Pretty Kool-A based off Japanese purikura photobooth pix. The graphic style is true to purikura but updated in our own style and references.  We were thinking bright faces, floating imagery, play with framing, composition, and of course, over stimulation. The person who interacts with the photobooth chooses the motif and has the ability to add their own handwriting and elements. Theres more pixx in our spread but you’re gonna have to yoink it off the streets to see em. Thank you! – Maggie Lee

The OH-WOW bookstore known for stocking largely artist publications, has recently added a new series of zines to it’s shelves. Produced by Tyler Healy who is the the curator for the show ” I’ll Tell You What, You Tell Me When” created the zines in conjunction to the series of exhibitions he has put on around the city. The premise of the zines has been a way to document each exhibition and the artist in the show while providing a tangible object for the viewer to take away. Each zine is a different color correlating to the shows color theme that Healy assigns to it. For each show Healy works with a revolving cast of which, is comprised of young New York City artists. Through these shows, Healy attempts to juxtapose a wide range of mediums and vernaculars through the different gallery spaces. The unifying theme of the work is also the largest restricting aspect of the shows which happens to be color. The next color for the show is slated to be orange and should be exhibiting in New York sometime mid spring. To obtain a zine or show info contact the OH-WOW bookstore or tyler@tylerhealy.com
