Ann Kelly is an artist who works in sculpture and drawings. She often finds her materials from the world around her, using carpet, cement, rocks, stones and tiles. I had a long conversation with Ann about her work, why she makes it and the choices she makes behind what materials she uses– how her creations come to be behind her personal view of the world.
Ann uses materials from the city– like rocks found under the Brooklyn Bridge, discarded carpet samples, matchbooks or beer cans. They possess a gritty quality, she wants her art to be dirty. Ann attended school in Baltimore, where she found much inspiration in trash that looked like sculptures and broken sidewalks.
Ann also spoke about “being a person”, isolated in oneself. “Language and our bodies always between one and others.” She described an early interest in objects becoming personified. For example, turning a mop upside down becomes so immediately human. Ann’s work portrays her relationship to the world and others, by making art in relation to herself, as perception of objects is dictated by ones own stature.
Larger than life “rock legs” mimic a common stance, or her use of carpet brings back memories of lying on carpet floor perhaps as a child. Tiles and mirrors offer more relationships to the body and domestic space. Ann explains how her use of mirrors is a way to make part of her sculpture invisible, creating space and not-space; they are like voids.
Her drawings often act as a counterbalance to sculpture, but are also often precursors to her sculptures. Her “Hand Drawings” have a similar relationship to the body, bringing up sensory memories of skin and exerted pressure the hands mimic the way Ann “touches” her drawings and sculptures.

These photos are of our close friend and LES legend Harry Jumonji wearing some of our summer clothing, shot by Akira Ruiz – both are part of the aNYthing family. Harry is an OG legendary skater and character – anyone who has met Harry will never forget him. If you haven’t had a chance to meet him, please try to. He’s the type of dude that can scream at a girl across the street and she’ll actually be charmed. If a cat has 9 lives, Harry has at least 50, for real. All heart. Akira is a New Yorker, born and bred. A trained photographer from the streets, Akira has a great eye and his photos are a reflection of his own vision. He’s out there – making moves. He recently shot Rick Ross for the cover of Vibe.
Jeffrey Joyal has just graduated from Bard College 2011, and now resides in NY, NY. He’s inspired by the toon character Bugs Bunny and likes the sci-fi novel Dune by Frank Herbert. When he’s not painting or sculpting, you can find Jeffery listening to DJ Screw and tweeting.
If you’ve come to the aNYthing store, you might have seen one of our tight crew members Nicky Lesser. Shes this little punk with clear glasses and a pile of curly knotty brown hair. She puts studs on everything and makes zines of glitter, photos of friends in bondage, and fluffy fabric. Nicky’s now out in LA and these are some pixx she shot of her homegirls with some gear, yeeeop! シ
