SKYPAGER interview

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 8:40 PM

If you are looking to have your faith restored in fundamentals like handstyles, mixtapes, bravery, and big-heartedness, look no further than L.A.’s SKYPAGER. The history is readily available, but on the occasion of a new collaboration with Arkitip we checked in to see where he’s at right now, with Los Angeles and with himself.

Is your word skypage a nostalgia trip? Are you interested in obsolete technology?
Beepers have been obsolete for some time now, and I suppose my aesthetic is informed by old technology as much as it is informed by the craftsman’s hand or other discarded practices of yesterday, but for me there is really no sense of nostalgia. We are here in the present it’s just our roots that touch back to another time and place.

Do you feel like anything’s changed in LA graffiti since ART IN THE STREETS happened?
I guess it’s created more visibility and with that maybe a bigger spotlight for artists from similar backgrounds. And I’m sure it’s drawn a few more people into the conversation as well, but I’m a little weary of the impact it’s had on legislators, law makers and the local authority. I have a growing concern that that the authority will use what ever devices they can to silence it, even if it means violating people’s constitutional rights.

What’s better, getting 100 stickers up in your neighborhood or crushing one well- located billboard?
Sounds risky, but with a 100 to 1 odds my guess is that it’s probably better to occasionally travel outside of your neighborhood.

Do you have research routines for spotting letter styles, like looking at design books or signpainting, or do you just encounter stuff as you pass through your day?
Visually I filter through it all. But I think the best stuff comes from a personal experience or place. Something happened upon or discovered along the way. Traveling and finding stuff without seeking.

What about the lettering on heavy metal records, you ever get down with those? Or death metal?
For sure. I mean album art in general is such a solid source of inspiration.  But I’ve always appreciated the longevity of some of those old logotypes, and how well they lent themselves to patches, tee shirts and other ephemera. They were all so fully realized right?

What do you hope to get done in the next year?
Man so much new heat on the horizon. Be on the look out for this Stephen Steven/URXED 12″ split on PPM later this year. Got a cool Word Shape collaboration on the way, as well as another Disaster zine in the works too. Plus three new mixtapes all lined up, including This Is Skypager II, and the Welcome to Skypager mixtape  Vol. IV man, I’m just pumped to be here in the new year. 2012′s!

Clayton Patterson’s New Book

at 10:41 AM

JEWS, A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE LOWER EAST SIDE is a three volume anthology edited by Clayton Patterson and Dr. Mareleyn Schneider. The editors have spent the past three years bringing together more than 150 authors to examine how Jews have shaped the culture, landscape, and politics of the Lower East Side over the past two centuries. Starting with the 19th century Orthodox settlements on Grand Street and runs right up to the present day, with articles on A-ron, John Zorn, and Economy Candy. Along the way, legendary Jewish figures like Emma Goldman, Barney Rosset, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Robert Frank, and June Leaf appear, in many cases contributing firsthand accounts of the ways that the Lower East Side changed them, or profiled by historians, friends, or artists. Alongside these key individuals, lesser-known but equally formative stories are told–the reign of Jewish boxers in the early 20th century; the “thugs and hooligans” of the Jewish Defense League; the importance of Judaism to the Beats; and many more.

A kickstarter campaign is currently raising money to publish all three volumes–more than 1500 pages broken up into three separate books. By donating to this campaign, you can pre-order copies of the book. There are other rewards, including photo prints drawn from Clayton’s archive; out of print books; even a DVD copy of Clayton’s complete footage of the Tompkins Square Park police riot, available for the first time and only through this kickstarter.
